What is Freggie Friday?

Emily Goold

Currently in a pilot project phase with the Ottawa Catholic Separate School Board, the Freggie Friday™ program is an in-school program that builds on elements of the Fruits and Veggies – Mix it up!™ campaign and encourages students to pack fruits and veggies for their lunches and snacks each Friday. The program includes an educator’s curriculum guide offering suggestions to integrate produce into lesson plans, incentive prizing and a visit by Freggie™ himself. Participating schools have noticed improvements relative to the students’ general awareness of fruits and veggies and the frequency with which fresh fruits and veggies are brought in as snacks or as part of lunch. The intent of the pilot project is to gather information and expand the Freggie Friday™ program into a National initiative.

Lyse McClelland

The Freggie Friday™ program was introduced locally when Emily Goold, a teacher in Kanata, ON decided to teach her students about the importance of fruits and veggies. Lyse McClelland, the mother of one of her students who had an inside track to Freggie™ as a member of the CPMA team introduced Emily to the Freggie™ program. Since then, a complete program, including a comprehensive guide for educators to help teachers integrate produce into their lesson plans, has been developed and is available to all registered Freggie Friday™ schools.

Freggie in the Classroom

In addition to the Freggie Friday Program, CPMA offers Freggie’s Eat Smart Classroom Nutrition Unit - Grade 3. The purpose of the Freggie’s Eat Smart Nutrition Unit is to inform students of the importance of including vegetables and fruit in one’s daily eating plan in accordance with Canada’s Food Guide. This resource is “classroom ready”. The Freggie’s Eat Smart Nutrition Unit is a teacher’s guide which outlines the curriculum connections; gives suggestions for teaching and learning strategies; provides assessment tools and resources; nutrition background information; and suggests ideas for extension activities.

Freggie is available for personal appearances throughout Canada. If you would like Freggie to visit your school or event please contact the Regional Produce Marketing Associations for more information:
